HOW DO WE HELP CHILDREN ?
The Dorset Schools Group was formed to help children learn about the growing of plants and to learn about their value in our lives.
Grants up to a maximum of £300 are awarded to primary, middle and special schools to fund new projects for their school gardens. Advice and help is given to the school with initial planning, costing and layout of the proposed garden. Even on the most difficult sites gardens can be created and huge enjoyment gained by the children. It is very rewarding for them to be able to grow flowers and vegetables and then cook and eat the results of their hard work.
So far the Trust has made over 100 grants to schools in the county - including 12 so far in 2010. As well as helping with the administration, members of the Schools Group act as school visitors in their own area so that each school sees the same person each time they visit.
Some examples of grants and work either done or in progress are:
Upton Junior School have a new bandstand, and the DGT has agreed a grant of £300 for planting around it.
Lockyers Middle School is building a greenhouse made out of plastic bottles
St Georges CE Primary School, Bourton, is seeking funding to make a vegetable garden from an overgrown site
Holy Trinity Primary School Weymouth are seeking a grant for a dipping pond
Lilliput First School Poole had a previous grant for an outside classroom and has recently opened a new polytunnel.
