2:00pm   Came  House Winterbourne Came, Dorset DT2 8NU

By kind permission of Morag Norton

Came is an enchanting Palladian Country House and private estate built in 1754. The house was built for John Damer by Francis Cartwright of Blandford in 1754.  In the mid-19th century a new Entrance, with porch, vestibule, cloakrooms, and the Domed Conservatory were added. The garden lies on the south side of the house, which was originally the front and point of arrival. The garden as you’ll see it is not very old, and is still very much a work in progress.

The majority of the garden was created by Rags’ mother Sarah, who replaced multiple tennis courts with an Italian inspired garden and a potager.  Sarah was a great believer in vistas, symmetry and ‘good bones’. Since moving into Came Rags has begun working to continue her mother’s legacy and ethos, with hard landscaping, new hedging and opening up vistas.  Rags’ favourite thing in the garden is ‘Dougal’, a lovely old weeping beech.

Cost:      £15.00  Including tea and coffee.
