About: Chettle House was acquired by Tom and Rosamond Sweet-Escott in 2015.
They set about revitalising the park and garden with reference to its historic development and significance. Provision was made in the planning for some new elements in the garden and include a new swimming pool, reflecting pool and a small kitchen garden; restoration of the Lime tree avenue, which was centred on the Baroque house designed by Thomas Archer, was aided by a grant from DGT. The wildernesses have been restored and are now called rookeries; very geometric and complementary to the overall landscape with the house sitting on a plinth in the middle.
The house, garden and park at Chettle are surrounded by a landscape rich in archaeological evidence but little remains visible. What is preserved is a fine early eighteenth century house and contemporary landscape in a relative state of intactness.
The masterplan for the renovation was done by the landscape architect Pip Morrison and was assisted by Dr Kate Felus, the garden historian.
