The Dorset Gardens Trust aims to encourage the conservation, protection and the evolution of historic parks and gardens throughout the county of Dorset. It is a registered charity and part of the Gardens Trust, recently formed from The Association of Gardens Trusts. It also organises specialist lectures and expeditions. It provides consultancy and financial help towards restoration and is working with the district councils to protect the county’s historic gardens. Through its schools programme the Trust helps to instil an early love of gardens.
The Dorset Gardens Trust is pleased to announce its Small Grants Scheme for financial help for restoration. Dorset garden owners (both public and private) of historic gardens on the Historic England Register or on the Dorset Gardens Trust List of Sites of Special Historic Interest are invited to apply for grants between £500 - £4,000, which will be available for conservation work, renovation, and enhancement relating to historic aspects of a garden and its structures. For example, recent Small Grants have been made in respect of repairs to stone steps, terracing, battlemented garden walls, restoration of a Cascade, replacement of wood decoration to a Chambers’ summerhouse and a contribution towards a Management Plan for a restoration project. This scheme is essentially for restoration and renovation and not for maintenance.
The terms of the scheme include the following conditions:
1.The garden owner must match any funding from the DGT, either personally or from another source
2.Two members of the DGT Council will visit the garden before any grant is offered. The project will be revisited on
completion and the grant will be paid on evidence of relevant receipted invoices. The grant may also be paid in instalments if this is appropriate.
3.The garden owner should make the garden and restored feature available for a DGT visit.
4.The decision of the Trustees is final.
