THE GARDENS TRUST

As the days shorten, we’re offering some Autumnal treats in-person and online.

Botanical Prints in the Royal Collection

Join us this month for a special in-person talk on flower drawings from the Royal Collection, including exquisite examples by Leonardo da Vinci, Alexander Marshal and Maria Sibylla Merian. At Cowcross St, London on Tuesday 28th October from 6pm. The talk is open to all. Gardens Trust members are also invited to a subsequent private visit to the Windsor Castle print room to study 17th and 18th century natural history drawings, in the company of two of the collection’s curators, on Wednesday 26th November.

Online, our series continue this month on Accessing the Archives of William Andrews Nesfield and on some of the more unusual Yorkshire Designed Landscapes.

We also start two new series:

Craze for Collecting, exploring plant-hunting adventures and expeditions, and the role of collectors today. The series kicks off with ‘She Sleeps on a Volcano’, the story of a once-celebrated woman who led botanical expeditions to the Andes in the early 20th century. Wednesdays at 6pm from 15th October.

Building the 18th-Century Garden sees the return of one of our most popular speakers, who will explore the role of art, antiquity and architecture in shaping designs during the century. The series is designed to pick up on themes and ideas not covered in any depth in last year’s introductory course on the History of Gardens – and so may appeal whether or not you joined us for the earlier series. Tuesday at 10am from 21st October.

We’re also pleased to offer two free online sessions in the coming weeks:

The Resilient Garden, the last in our three lunchtime sessions on How Can we Make our Gardens Greener? Author of What to Grow for a Climate Resilient Garden, Dr Amanda Rasmussen will identify tough plants that can survive long dry periods, and discuss whether we really have to shun all our old favourites - or are they superheroes in disguise? Wednesday 22 October at 12.30pm.

• Our annual New Research Symposium, now in its 15th year, with explore the latest international investigations in garden history. Join us on a journey from bulb dealing next to Rubens’ Garden in 17th-century Antwerp and Lady Eggar’s Indian garden at Alipore, to the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement on the work of Canadian author L. M. Montgomery and three unofficial memorial gardens to the London Blitz. Saturday 15 November at 2pm.

Tickets for all our online events include access to the live talk and to a recording for two weeks afterwards. Gardens Trust members receive a 25% discount on tickets on production of their membership number.
